Trente et Quarante is played with 6 packs of 52 cards shuffled in front of the players who are seated around a shield-shaped table. The cards have a nominal value. The face cards are worth 10. There are four single bets‹Red, Black, Couleur, Inverse‹that are paid equally. The croupier deals two rows of cards‹a first row of black cards, a second row of red cards; the total of each should be between 30 and 40. The total nearest to 30 wins. The chances of Couleur and Inverse are linked to the first card of the first row. If the first card is the same colour as the winning card, Couleur wins, Inverse loses, and inversely. Should two rows reach the same total, the result is invalid, except for 31, the stakes then lose half of their value, unless the player waits for the next round to try and free himself.
